Germany-based Heraeus Precious Metals has opened a new factory dedicated to precious metal chemistry processes, including precious metals recycling, in Nanjing, China. Heraeus started the Nanjing facility project in June 2018.
The company has invested $120 million into the new facility, which could be expanded if necessary.
The 84,000-square-meter facility is expected to enhance Heraeus’ capacity to refine and recycle precious metals as well as chemical products, especially platinum group metals (PGMs).
With the opening of the Nanjing plant, Heraeus’ recycling capacity will reach 3,000 tons, while its chemical production capacity will triple.
“We are committed to working with companies along the entire precious metals value chain in China and toward a more sustainable and more innovation-oriented development, and to contribute to the growth of China’s new materials sector,” says Jan Rinnert, Heraeus’ chairman.
Regarding expansion of the plant, a new wing of the building for precious metal coatings already is being built and is scheduled to open in 2019.
