Harsco Corp. announced that its Heckett MultiServ division has been named by Corus to receive the company’s 2001 Chief Executive’s Award for contractor health and safety. Corus is one of the largest steel companies in the world. Heckett is the largest provider of outsourced services to steel mills and other metallurgical producers.
The award recognizes Heckett MultiServ for its role at the Corus Tuscaloosa, Ala., steel plant, where Heckett MultiServ has successfully worked more than 547,000 man-hours over three years without experiencing a lost time injury. Corus Tuscaloosa is a leader in the production of high quality carbon coil and steel plate. The mill has implemented the DuPont STOP System (Safety Training Observation Program) to promote and encourage all parts of its operation to observe, identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
Heckett MultiServ provides Corus Tuscaloosa with a range of on-site mill services, including scrap yard management, slag handling and metal recovery, operating on a 24-hour a day, seven day a week basis with more than 50 full-time employees.
Gene Iannazzo, Heckett's executive vice president for North America, said, "We are indeed honored and proud to be recognized by Corus as its safest industrial services contractor. Harsco's worldwide SafeGuard program is built on the belief that all injuries and occupational illnesses are preventable. We make no compromise when it comes to safety. We're a company that understands that safety adds value to our customers and stockholders as well as our employees."
In 1999, Heckett MultiServ was similarly honored by British Steel, a predecessor to Corus, in recognition of Heckett MultiServ's overall management of safety and its safety-related policies and procedures, and for having completed seven years without a lost time injury at British Steel's Aldwarke, Rotherham mill in the United Kingdom.
