Heartland Energy Plant Plans Abandoned

Proponents of tire recycling plant end push in Minnesota.

Plans for the tire burning plant developers wanted to build in Preston, Minn., have been scrapped.

The owners of the proposed facility, facing significant local opposition, have opted to drop their plan to build a tire pyrolysis facility in the state.

However, despite the announcement by the owners, Bob and Elaine Maust, that they would discontinue their attempt at building the plant in the area, there has not yet been any official word documentation to that effect submitted to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the agency that is performing the environmental impact statement on the proposal.

A spokeswoman for the MPCA said that the agency will continue to perform the needed research on the project until there is written documentation, submitted to the agency, that the project would be scrapped.

According to local press reports, the owners of the project hope to reintroduce the tire project in another area, although they did not indicate where they may look to site the plant.

The owners have been working on the project for close to four years, and recently the owners have run into significant opposition by residents of the area where the company was hoping to build the plant. (see earlier story here)
