A fire that reportedly started within a pile of auto hulks burned throughout much of the July 4, 2015, weekend on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
A report from KHON TV in Honolulu, Hawaii, says firefighters from that city arrived at Island Recycling, Kapolei, Hawaii, at 5 a.m., Saturday, July 4, responding to reports of smoke and fire.
By midday Saturday the fire was reported by KHON to be “contained to the large pile of [scrap] and is not spreading.” However, a fire department spokesperson described the scrap stockpile as being “a rather large pile [about] 100 feet wide, 400 feet deep and about 40 feet in height.”
The fire department intended to use heavy equipment to pull apart the pile “slowly and carefully” to extinguish the flames at their source, in a procedure that was expected to last throughout the weekend.
No injuries were reported connected to the fire, and no cause has been determined, according to KHON.
