According to the state of Hawaii’s Health Department, the state's bottle bill redemption rate hit an all-time high in September.
The department said that the program hit an 85 percent redemption rate during the month. Officials estimate that more than 50 million bottles and cans were recycled during that month. The redemption program began the first of this year.
The Department of Health also reported that fiscal year 2004 the redemption rate for containers was 40 percent, while this year the figure is more than twice that, 82 percent.
