According to published reports, the Maui, Hawaii, Planning Commission has rejected an application made by Big Island Scrap Metal to expand the materials the company could handle at its Hawaii facility. The company had filed a request to accept appliances and other metals, in addition to the bottles and cans it already collects at its facility.
The company had applied for an amendment to the company’s existing permit to allow it to take in scrap metal and batteries.
The Planning Commission rejected the application despite the fact that the Maui Planning Department had recommended approval of the application.
According to the Maui News, planning commissioners also scolded the company for operating without the correct permits.
