Pennsylvania-based Harsco Corp. says its Harsco Environmental business unit has signed a five-year extension of a contract to provide mill services to Tata Steel at the Port Talbot blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace complex in the United Kingdom.
The contract extension runs for five years and started July 1 of this year. Harsco describes Tata Steel as the U.K.’s largest steel producer, with 3 million metric tons of annual capacity. The firm says it already has been providing services including metal recovery, scrap processing, slag handling and other basic oxygen steelmaking services in Port Talbot for more than 40 years.
Over the next five years, Harsco Environmental says it will support Tata Steel’s transformation project to decarbonize its operations. Tata Steel’s U.K. business has set a goal to achieve CO2-neutral steelmaking by 2045 and achieving at least a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. “Harsco will continue to work with Tata Steel on several continuous improvement initiatives and collaborate on the ongoing transformation project,” says the firm.
“This extension attests to Harsco Environmental’s record of excellent service with Tata Steel’s Port Talbot steelworks,” says Harsco Environmental Chief Operating Officer Russ Mitchell. “We look forward to strengthening this partnership as Tata Steel works toward its decarbonization goals and improvement initiatives.”
