Harsco, MSA Sign Global Licensing Agreement on BOSS Software

Harsco will incorporate software with its specialized scrap management solutions program.

Harsco Metals Group Ltd. has signed a global licensing agreement with Management Science Associates Inc. (MSA) for the use of MSA’s Blending Optimization Software Suite (BOSS) software as part of Harsco’s specialized scrap management solutions.

Harsco presently provides scrap management solutions to steel producers through its ScrapMaster system for scrap inventory management and quality control. MSA’s BOSS module has been designed to help steelmakers optimize the scrap mix by determining the least-cost combination of raw materials needed to produce a given heat, lineup or production schedule, taking into account the various operational and quality constraints. Harsco adds that the BOSS software also provides the ability to do “what-if” scenarios and to analyze the costs/savings associated with using alternative materials, energy consumption, density and other constraints.

According to a Harsco release, MSA will retain its right to market the BOSS software in the United States and several proximate territories, while Harsco will have the exclusive rights to use the BOSS system in the rest of the world.

Galdino Claro, CEO of Harsco Metals, says, “We are delighted to be entering into this strategic partnership with MSA. They are already the recognized leaders in their field of scrap metal optimization. This technology is the springboard for Harsco to provide even deeper value to our customers in the critical areas of process control and scrap cost savings. Crucially, it will allow our customers to maximize the efficiencies available from the ScrapMaster system. The result is a world-class solution for our customers in the field of scrap supply chain management from the scrap merchant to the meltshop.”

Cathy Opsitnick, CEO and president of MSA, says, “The opportunity to partner with one of the recognized international leaders of support services to the metals and mining industries is very exciting for us. Harsco Metals’ strong reputation and global reach enable us to introduce our optimization and other analytical services to a much broader audience. The combined offerings of Harsco Metals and MSA are very timely and beneficial to metals industry clients who are searching for innovative and economically effective ways to reduce costs and improve productivity in their operations.”
