Harsco Receives $55 Million Contract from Italian Steel Mill

Mill services company will target on-site scrap and slag yard management at Alfa Acciai’s mill in Brescia, Italy.

Harsco Corp., an industrial services and engineered products company headquartered in Camp Hill, Pa., has signed a six-year contract with the Italian steel company Alfa Acciai Group for steel mill services in Italy. Harsco says that the contract is valued at more than $55 million over its duration at anticipated production levels.

Alfa Acciai Group is one of Italy's largest electric arc furnace (EAF) steel producers.

The contract will focus on addressing on-site scrap and slag yard management at Alfa's steel mill in Brescia, Italy. Under terms of the contract Harsco will develop and manage a new scrap yard for the mill and provide services for processing the mill's EAF slag. Under investments being led by Alfa Acciai, together with Harsco to enhance productivity and environmental sustainability, the new operations will replace older equipment with new slag handling carriers, an advanced weighing system and new GPS detection systems aimed at full control of the slag transport and scrap yard management processes. Operations are expected to be completed and underway by the end of 2012.

The mill produces a wide range of reinforced steel bars and has developed process innovations to give its products special mechanical features, including high ductility, a quality considered indispensable for steel used in seismic areas.

"We are honored by our selection by this important customer and the opportunity it provides to deliver meaningful, long-term value," says Galdino Claro, executive vice president and CEO of the Harsco Metals & Minerals group.
