Guam Governor Lifts Scrap Metal Shipping Ban

Guam’s Governor Felix Camacho has lifted a shipping ban on the export of scrap metal from Guam.

The lifting of the ban results from news that all panels that were part of an historic monument were recovered. The stolen items were 34 panels stolen from the Asan Bay Overlook.

"The reason for the ban was to insure that our national treasures were recovered," Governor Camacho said. "Thanks to the work of local and federal law enforcement, we have the panels and we will resume the export of scrap metals from Guam."

Governor Camacho met with island scrap metal companies to discuss the rash of thefts of both non-ferrous and ferrous metals from public sites that led to the ban. The companies agreed to be more cautious and diligent when receiving scrap metal and said they will network with law enforcement whenever suspicions arise.

The Governor, in cooperation with the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency, will work with exporters to ensure the backlog of outbound products are expedited through the sea port.

"The theft of the brass panels and other metals has affected every sector of our community," Governor Camacho said. "This is a community effort to deter these crimes in the future."
