GRC says the program is designed to provide businesses affected by the California Cell Phone Recycling Act of 2004 with an environmentally responsible way to profit from their inventories of retired cell phones. The program is available nationwide to cellular phone retailers, distributors, wholesalers and repair centers.
According to GRC, corporations and businesses simply pack the unwanted phones and ship them to the GRC facility in Miramar, Fla. The financial return begins at $1.00 per pound but can extend higher depending on the specifics of the program. The company pays for the shipping and recycling of the phones.
“Thousands of wireless-related companies store vast quantities of unused phones in their warehouses and stores without knowing what to do with them,” Henry Garcia, founder, chairman and CEO of GRC Wireless Recycling, says. “Cellular phones are only becoming more pervasive. We offer a socially responsible solution to the growing burdens of recycling legislation and requirements, such as California’s Cell Phone Recycling Act of 2004.”
Phones are recycled through GRC Wireless Recycling’s Reuse and Destruction & Refining programs. Through the Reuse program, collected phones are marketed to cellular operators in need of inexpensive, outdated technology. Phones without market value are processed through the company’s environmentally responsible Destruction & Refining program that includes shredding, smelting and precious metals refining.
GRC Wireless Recycling’s new recycling program for the wireless industry is an extension of the company’s successful Shelter Alliance program, which uniquely combines cellular-phone recovery with domestic violence fundraising efforts. Shelter Alliance works with more than 1,200 active participants in 49 states and Puerto Rico and has contributed more than $1.4 million to domestic violence through the collection of retired cellular phones. Shelter Alliance is on track to contribute more than $3 million in 2005.
