Grantham Industries, a Lincolnshire, United Kingdom-based firm that operates a family of waste management and recycling companies, is investing £2 million in a new metal recycling center.
GBM Metal Recycling opened in January 2010 as a 15-acre site in Caistor, United Kingdom. The facility, which was formerly known as Hambleton Brothers, is the largest scrap metal facility in its county, according to Grantham Industries.
By expanding into metal recycling, Grantham Industries says it expects to strengthen its position in the recycling and waste management sector. The new site has the capacity to hold more than 120,000 vehicles, as well as store thousands of tons of scrap metal. The site also is an authorized treatment facility for end-of-life vehicles.
The company says all metal processing will be done in line with the company’s ISO 14001:2004 certification.
“For us the acquisition of this new facility is a natural progression, adding to our already comprehensive demolition, plant hire, recycling and waste management services,” says Simon Grantham, the company’s sales director.
“It will give us the competitive edge, particularly in relation to our demolition arm as it means we can cut out the middle man by processing metal waste in-house,” adds Grantham. “This will essentially mean we can offer a more cost-effective service to our customers.”
The new facility, to be called GBM Metal Recycling, will be led by John Hall, who has more than 40 years of experience in the scrap metal industry.
“While a large proportion of the metals will be dealt with on site, we will also be exporting some scrap to India where it will be made into lower grade steels to be re-used in the construction industry,” Hall says. “It demonstrates how waste products that no longer serve a purpose can be recycled into something useful.”
In addition to its scrap and demolition businesses, Grantham Industries operates GBM Waste Management, GBM Environmental, GBM Plant Hire and Tudworth Recycling Centre.
