Georgia-Pacific Corp. announced that it will be taking downtime at one of its tissue machines in Old Town, Maine next month. According to local press reports the machine will be down for the week of March 3 and the week of March 24.
In addition to the machine shutdowns, the mill's tissue converting department will be closed one day a week for seven weeks, beginning this past week.
"The sluggish economy, in combination with the competitive environment in the marketplace for tissue products, are the primary reasons for the production curtailments," said Robert Burns, a Georgia-Pacific spokesman based in Atlanta, in a statement. "Our inventories have continued to build and at this time we need to balance our inventories with market needs."
