Government Liquidation LLC, Scottsdale, Ariz., will be holding an online auction of decommissioned military aircraft that will result in the sale of considerable amounts of scrap metal.
The sale of assets at the U.S Air Force base in Tucson, Ariz., marks the second time in the company’s 10-year history that it will sell scrap metal from military aircraft, according to Government Liquidation.
The airplanes are located at the USAF’s Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. The metal contained within the planes being sold will total around 27 million pounds of ferrous and nonferrous scrap.
Government Liquidation will begin the auction on April 11, 2012 and it will close on April 13. Those seeking more information or wishing to participate in the online marketplace can go to http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=5138389#ItemManifest.
Currently, more than 4,200 planes are housed at the “boneyard” at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, according to Government Lidquidation. The Air Force base is the designated location for excess military and government aircraft.
After non-functional, end-of-life aircraft have been stripped of all components, the Department of Defense turns the material over to Government Liquidation to be auctioned for its scrap metal content. The 27 million-pound scrap sale consists of aircraft parts constructed with metals such as aluminum, steel and titanium.
