Jonathan M. Gold of the Newark Group’s Recycled Fibers Division, Marblehead, Mass., has been named as the first recipient of the Phil Alpert Award.
The award is presented by Paper Stock Industries (PSI) chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, “to someone who has shown outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the PSI chapter of ISRI and to the scrap paper industry for a minimum of 10 years.”
It is named for former PSI president Phil Alpert, who died in November of 2001. Alpert was a long-time associate of National Fiber Supply Co., Chicago, and a PSI officer and active member throughout his career.
Gold was announced as this year’s Phil Alpert Award winner at the PSI Fall Meeting, which took place in late October in Amelia Island, Fla. Gold was introduced by PSI Immediate Past President Nini Krever as someone who was, “a president of this chapter at a young age and has continued to serve the trade association in a multitude of ways, mostly from behind the scenes and without fanfare.”
Gold was further described by Krever as being “outspoken when necessary and tireless when fighting a cause that he feels needs correcting. He combines humility with grace and loyalty and team effort. This winner has demonstrated exceptional gentlemanly conduct and, at a strategic time in the history of this chapter, the ability to lead by personal example in order to smoothly transition leadership.”
Phil Alpert’s former wife, Cindy Alpert, was on hand to help present the award to Gold.
