Glickman Metal Recycling Adds Sennebogen 825 M

Company benefits from decreased downtime.

Glickman Metal Recycling, Wichita, Kan., has added a Sennebogen 825 M scrap handler.

According to Richard Caldwell, the yard’s operation manager, the Sennebogen machine’s ease of maintenance has helped the company keep up with the maintenance demands of its shear and the rest of its equipment fleet.

The yard processes nearly 2,000 tons of shredded vehicles and appliances each week and Saturday’s are spent servicing equipment.

“The Sennebogen machines are very easy to work with, and that is a big thing for us,” Caldwell says. “We’re really pleased with this 825 M and downtime is almost nil—just basic service. And if they do need a repair, they are really easy to work on because of their ground-level access to the major service points.”

Caldwell says the Sennebogen machine requires less routine maintenance than other material handlers because of its reversing fan and boom cylinder design.

“With other cranes, it’s a big job to pull the fans out of the machine and clean the cooling system, then mount it back up again,” Caldwell says. “With Sennbogen’s reversing fan, you just let the cooling system blow itself clean then go back to work. There’s little to no downtime at all.”

A simple design modification to the boom cylinders also saves service time. “New operators have a tendency to bottom out the cylinders when they’re loading,” Caldwell says. The cylinders, damaged by repeated impact, have to be rebuilt or repaired regularly. “But with this machine, Sennebogen puts stops on the boom that prevent the cylinders from bottoming out,” Caldwell says. “So the cylinders last that much longer.”

Sennebogen North America President Constantino Lannes says, “It’s a matter of understanding how our equipment actually gets used in the field.”

The addition of the Sennebogen 825 M at the Glickman yard is part of upgrade that began when the Yaffe Companies Inc. bought the 20-acre yard along with another Wichita operation in 2002. Yaffe, based in Muskogee, Okla., has been expanding through the Midwest and recently consolidated its Kansas operations at the Glickman yard.

Glickman worked with Sennebogen distributor Victor L. Phillips Co. (VLP) and sales representative Craig Schroeder. “Schroeder and VLP stood behind the equipment and they were ready to provide the level of service we needed,” Caldwell says.
