Medford, New York-based Gershow Recycling has participated in several community-focused activities this spring and early summer, ranging from the donation of old vehicles for first responder training to the granting of several scholarships.
In May, the metals recycling firm with nine locations in and around New York City donated the use of 30 end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) for use in the 18th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, held at the Northport Fire Department’s Training Grounds in Northport, New York.
Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington, New York, facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the tournament.
More than two dozen teams from 17 fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working using hydraulic rescue tools to extricate a participant placed as a crash victim into one of the ELVs.
After the tournament, the obsolete vehicles were brought back to a Gershow facility that includes an auto shredding plant.
Gershow Recycling also has announced the recipients of four environmental conservation scholarships at regional schools.
Most recently, a $1,000 scholarship went to Kelly Delgado Pacheco, a recent graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School.
Gershow awards the scholarships to graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue a degree in either engineering or environmental science.
Also receiving $1,000 scholarships were John Martini of Freeport High School, Anthony Catarelli of Riverhead High School and Lamiah Ali of Bay Shore High School, all in New York.
In June, Gershow Recycling also sponsored the Medford Chamber’s Concert for Veterans, part of the Medford Chamber’s Summer Concert Series that took place June 13 and featured a band called The Projekt.
