The Brussels-based World Steel Association (Worldsteel) has announced the winners of its 13th Steelie Awards, which this year honor five steel producing companies in six categories for contributions to the sector.
Among those honored is Brazil-based scrap-fed electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Gerdau S.A., which Worldsteel has recognized with an Excellence in Communications Programs Steelie. Worldsteel says the global steelmaker and recycler has been honored for “how the century-old Gerdau transformed its image and became the steel company with the highest global engagement.”
South Korea-based steel producer POSCO has received the Excellence in Sustainability Steelie Award for its effort to use oyster shell waste in its sintering processes. An Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment has been awarded to India-based Tata Steel for developing “a tool to support innovation and customer engagement life cycle[s].”
Other Steelie Awards have gone to: China-based Ansteel Group Corp. Ltd., for Excellence in Low-carbon Steel Production involving pellets used in its blast furnace; Luxembourg-based Ternium receiving an Excellence in Education and Training award for a certification program; and POSCO winning a second award for Innovation of the Year for a pickling technology.
