Gerdau Ameristeel Joins AISI

Gerdau Ameristeel is the fourth largest steel company in North America.

The American Iron and Steel Institute has announced that Gerdau Ameristeel, the fourth largest steel company and the second largest minimill steel producer in North America, has joined the association.

The association’s board of directors approved the company as a producer member at its quarterly meeting held in Washington, D.C.

“I’m pleased to welcome Gerdau Ameristeel President and CEO Mario Longhi to the AISI board of directors,” says Thomas Gibson, AISI president and CEO. “With its significant presence in North America, including 19 electric steel mills and an extensive network of recycling and fabricating facilities, Gerdau Ameristeel adds strength to AISI’s already established presence on Capitol Hill and our influence with policymakers. We also believe AISI’s strong advocacy on behalf of the North American steel industry, our collaborative research and our support for a pro-manufacturing agenda, will deliver added-value to Gerdau Ameristeel in support of its mission to create value for its customers, employees, shareholders and communities.”

“I personally look forward to contributing to the important work that AISI does on behalf of our industry. Gerdau Ameristeel is committed to helping ensure that the American steel industry remains globally competitive and a foundation for the economic recovery of our country,” says Longhi.

AISI is comprised of 24 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 140 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. The association’s members represent about 80 percent of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.
