Geminor ships RDF internationally

Norway-based company ships Italy-produced refuse-derived fuel to Denmark.

Norway-based company Geminor says it has become the first company to engage in the shipment of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from Italy to Denmark.

In December 2018, a ship carrying RDF from Italy reached its port in Sjelland, Denmark, according to the firm. The test shipment of 2,370 metric tons of sorted household waste generated in Naples, Italy, “constitutes a milestone for both Geminor and the industry,” states the firm.

“Geminor is the first to implement RDF delivery from Italy to Scandinavia, and we are happy to see that the first project has been successful,” remarks Ralf Schöpwinkel, chief operating officer of Geminor. “The quality of the logistics process has been high, and the public waste company in Naples has delivered good quality bales,” he added.

Regarding its reach into southern Europe, Geminor indicates that in “a constantly changing market, it is important to consider and test several alternative suppliers outside northern Europe.”

The United Kingdom market has delivered secondary fuels to off-takers in the Nordic countries for some time, according to the company, “but with Brexit coming there are uncertainties regarding the future flow of RDF.” Geminor says Italy has a sizable surplus of household waste, and it likely is “a market we will continue to develop in the future,” according to Schöpwinkel.

Geminor, founded in 2004, describes itself as a leading player in the European secondary fuels market, handling more than 1,4 million metric tons of feedstock annually and holding contracts with more than 80 waste-to-energy facilities.
