The Basel Action Network (BAN, Seattle, has announced that Barrie, Ontario-based GEEP, an electronics recycling company with facilities around the world, has achieved its first e-Stewards certification at its Grand Prairie, Texas, plant. GEEP says that its other North American locations will be certified in the coming months.
“The e-Stewards program represents values that GEEP was already passionate about,” says John Krakowiak, general manager of GEEP’s Texas location. “As a responsible recycler we will continue to follow best practices in recycling electronic waste for our customers, employees and the community.”
The e-Stewards certification program recognizes electronics recyclers that adhere to environmental and socially responsible practices. Thirty-three recycling facilities are certified to the e-Stewards standard currently.
The e-Stewards certification specifically prohibits export of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries. It also prohibits toxic waste from being disposed of in solid waste landfills and incinerators and the use of prison labor in the recycling of electronics. It maintains standards to protect worker health and safety and private data stored in computer and peripheral memory devices.
