The consulting firm Gershman, Brickner & Bratton Inc. (GBB), Fairfax, Va., has announced that Timothy Giardina, who joined GBB as a principal associate in December 2009, has been promoted to vice president.
"In his expanded role as vice president Tim will increase his contribution on GBB Project Teams, helping clients with his hands-on experience with running waste collection and service companies and contribute to the firm's expansion with additional business development responsibilities focused on collection-related consulting services," says Harvey Gershman, GBB president.
In a release, Giardina says, "I'm excited about the opportunity and look forward to my increased contribution in this new role with GBB. My prior private sector, hands-on experience in collection operations, procurement and contracting will directly benefit our clients and will be the focus of my business development efforts."
Giardina has more than 25 years of industry experience with a focus on collection, transfer station, landfill, recycling and medical waste operations. In the past 18 months, as a GBB principal associate, Giardina has played a key role in the successful review/procurement of collection programs for Fort Wayne, Ind., which included reviewing current garbage and recycling collection programs; providing recommendations/direction for future programs; and overseeing the procurement process with vendors. According to GBB, guiding and facilitating the process resulted in annual savings to the city of $300,000 from current costs and an estimated savings of more than $2 million from the city's prior procurement process while also adding additional services.
While working with GBB, Giardina also assisted with a performance evaluation of contractors for Fort Worth, Tex., which included a review of relevant contracts, call center data, and internal reports; interviews with city staff and contractors; and field observations and a market analysis.
Prior to joining GBB, Giardina spent 13 years with Waste Management Inc.
GBB also announced that Elizabeth Rice has joined the firm as consultant 1. She joined GBB in 2010 as a summer intern/research assistant where she gained experience in researching recycling and collection programs and waste-to-energy technologies.
"We got to know Elizabeth during her 2010 internship, and she is definitely passionate about the environment and has a bright professional future," says Gershman. "Her work ethic, passion and ability to integrate herself with the GBB team were driving factors in offering her a permanent position with the firm."
While an intern/research assistant at GBB she assisted in the revision and preparation of waste collection and hauling services documents with city officials and attorneys for Fort Wayne. She also provided research for review and analysis of recycling collection services and collection truck routing for Huntsville, Ala. Rice also updated and prepared for publication two case studies of drywall recycling facilities through communication with facility managers in an assignment for the U.S. EPA.
During her GBB internship, Rice also helped collect information to build databases regarding U.S. residential refuse and recycling collection services, as well as locations of construction and demolition recycling facilities.
