G-P Idles Two Machines at Mill

Georgia-Pacific curtailed the use of its two tissue paper machines in Old Town, Maine, March 24,. Those employees will be required to take vacation or unpaid time off, according to mill administrators. At least a one-week shutdown of the machines is anticipated.

"It's based on the market conditions," G-P senior communications manager Robert Burns said. "As the market dictates, we'll start back up."

The company hopes to be able to tell employees whether they will be needed for work the following week by the time the schedule is released Thursday.

The mill's pulping capacity and pulp dryer will continue to operate, but limited production shutdowns will occur in the tissue converting department. These will affect various lines and the employees who operate them. The mill's tissue shipping operations will continue to serve G-P's customers. Bangor (Maine) Daily News
