Freetown, Massachusetts, stalls petition against recycler

Residents call for requirements to Excel Recycling facility.

The Taunton (Massachusetts) Daily Gazette reports that the Freetown Board of Appeals voted Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at Freetown Elementary School, to delay action on a petition to block a recycling facility in Assonet.

The town’s building inspector permitted Dartmouth-based Excel Recycling LLC to build the facility without special requirements. Area residents asked the board to invalidate this permit because of noise and traffic concerns.

The permit, issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, allows Excel to process as much as 60 tons of scrap metal per hour at the facility and 20,000 tons monthly.

The board voted to delay the final decision until its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Freetown Senior Center, the article says.
