Foresite Sponsors EPR Workshops

Workshops will help manufacturers deal with extended producer responsibility laws.

Foresite Systems Ltd. will sponsor two three-hour seminars in California November 18 and 20 to help manufacturers cope with the growing complexity of global "extended producer responsibility" laws.

The first invitation-only session will be held Nov. 18 at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco Airport; the second session will be held at the Los Angeles airport Hilton Hotel Nov. 20. The sessions are being organized by Raymond Communications, College Park MD.

"EPR laws for packaging, batteries and electronic products are now on the books in 30 countries, plus new mandates in California and Canada. Even if your distributors handle your packaging fees, new regulations will require labels and paperwork to be done where the product or package is designed," says Foresite director Graham Margetson.

Consultant Victor Bell of Environmental Packaging International will cover the basics of EPR policy, from how to deal with "Green Dot" fees and labels, to what is expected from the amended " Essential Requirements" for packaging and the new Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive in Europe and now California.

This issue is getting even more complex for electronics makers, because they have three sets of mandates to cope with: packaging, batteries and now electronics products.

Bell will explain how major companies are calculating packaging fees in 28 countries, and electronics fees in six countries and what to expect from new packaging and product fees in Canada next year.

Attendees will also see a demonstration of Foresite's Pack.NET, the world's leading compliance software for EPR requirements on packaging and products. Foresite's software is used by major companies, such as Microsoft, HJ Heinz, Eastman Kodak, PPG Industries, Mattel, Lego and hundreds of European companies. Tesco, the UK's largest retailer, says it plans to save about $30 million per year in materials cost using Foresite's packaging database.

The sessions are open only to managers at international manufacturing firms.
