Florida C&D Landfill Catches Fire

Local roads closed due to fire at GEL Corp. landfill.

A GEL Corp. construction and demolition debris landfill caught fire in Orange City, Fla., on Aug. 13, according to a report in the Daytona Beach News-Journal (Daytona Beach, Fla.).

No injuries were reported, but two local roads were closed to traffic as a result, according to the report.

Officials from the Orange City Fire Department believe the fire started in a mulch pile and then spread to a pile of recyclable materials and a nearby structure.

The landfill is preparing to close and must extinguish all fires and reshape the hill that covers the debris by Oct. 6.
