Firm Takes Step Toward Recycled Plastics in Food Containers

Plastics recycler moving further in the use of recycled plastics for food packaging uses.

Phoenix Technologies LP was granted a letter of no objection late last month from the Canadian Bureau of Chemical Safety’s Health Products and Food Branch to use recycled PET material from its Phoenix Process for use in food and beverage containers.

The company received two U.S. Food and Drug Administration non-objection letters two years ago.

The company has been producing commercial volumes at their 90,000 sq.ft. Bowling Green, Ohio facility since November 2000.

“Phoenix was the first company to receive FDA approval for direct blend of RPET into food containers using up to 100 percent content from curbside material”, explained Jean Bina, director of Commercial Operations.  “We are thrilled about this latest announcement, as the Canadian approval provides us with another significant endorsement regarding the purity and commercial viability of our technology”, she added.

The Canadian Non-Objection, similar to the US FDA non-objection letter issued to Phoenix,  covers all uses.

Donald Hayward, general manager of Phoenix Technologies, said, “We are pleased with the continuing success we have met in bringing our patented process for recycled PET to full scale commercialization, and excited about further expansion based on increased demand.”

“The Canadian announcement will further develop our markets and hopefully encourage additional RPET recovery, as acceptance for use in food application grows and the need for additional PCR feedstocks strives to keep pace." commented Bina.

This plant is the first such facility in North America, and the largest global producer providing a merchant supply source for FDA recycled curbside PET.
