A recycled-content auto insulation product made by Federal-Mogul Corp., Southfield, Mich., will be used in the 2012 Buick Verano model.
QuietShield GRN insulation, which debuted in the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, is made from cardboard and plastic scrap generated internally at Federal-Mogul plants. It is being used as acoustical material in the Verano's headliner to reduce noise in the passenger compartment.
"We are extremely pleased to see Buick extend this innovation to another exciting new vehicle in its lineup," says Ramzi Hermiz, senior vice president of vehicle safety and protection for Federal-Mogul.
Materials used in QuietShield include cardboard, carpet fibers and recycled yarns and fabrics. Recyclable materials collected at the auto manufacturing plants are shredded, combined with other recycled materials and bonded using a proprietary Federal-Mogul manufacturing process to form QuietShield GRN.
The process was developed by Federal-Mogul engineers with expertise in the development and manufacturing of high-performance textile-based protection products, according to the company.
The Federal-Mogul material can be produced at a thickness ranging from 5 to 25 millimeters and can be supplied in die-cut forms or as roll goods ranging from 10 to 75 inches in width.
QuietShield GRN also can be used in commercial or industrial environments where noise abatement or isolation is required. Such non-vehicle applications could range from building construction materials to dishwashers, says Federal-Mogul.
"QuietShield provides a clear benefit to manufacturers, consumers and the environment," Hermiz adds. "The interest from OEMs has been very strong. We are launching QuietShield applications with multiple automotive OEMs and we expect to see QuietShield appear in other vehicle segments and in other non-vehicle markets in the near future."
Federal-Mogul Corp. is a supplier of powertrain and safety systems to manufacturers in numerous market sectors.
