The board of trustees for the New York Power Authority (NYPA), White Plains, N.Y., has approved an allocation of low-cost hydropower to support a project to redevelop an abandoned commercial brownfield site into a scrap metal recycling facility in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Falls Metal Recycling, which is partly owned by Baltimore-based Baltimore Scrap, is expected to invest close to $15 million to open the scrap facility at the 14-acre site. The facility will include a 4,500 hp auto shredder and a metals separation system. The company hopes to have the facility operational by the end of 2011 after Union Carbide, the previous owner of the brownfield site, completes its cleanup.
According to a report in the Niagara Gazette, the other joint venture partner on the project is the Santarosa Group, a Niagara Falls-based holding company that includes Buffalo Fuel Corp., Innovative Waste Recovery and Singer Transport.
The news report also indicates the Niagara Falls Planning Board recently voted to table a request to approve the scrap metal facility’s site plan until its June 8, 2011, meeting.
