PhoenixPET, the brand of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin produced by Johannesburg-based Extrupet, has won a Gold Award for Sustainability at the 2015 Institute of Packaging South Africa’s (IPSA) Gold Pack Awards.
Extrupet says PhoenixPET is the first resin produced in South Africa to achieve recognition for sustainable packaging, and that the award validates the company’s view that PhoenixPET serves as a benchmark solution for cradle-to-cradle sustainable packaging. The company also notes that brandowners are increasingly turning to sustainable packaging options as alternatives to virgin material.
PhoenixPET is produced at a recycling plant that has been certified by the British Retail Consortium. According to Extrupet, the facility produces pellets that can comprise 100 percent usage in all grades of packaging.
The company points out that four of the five award nominees for PET bottle packaging contain PhoenixPET, with variances ranging from 25 percent to 100 percent.
