An order for steel rail tied to a grant extended to Amtrak will provide needed business for Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel, Pueblo, Colorado.
An online report from Fox Channel 21 in Colorado says the electric arc furnace (EAF) mill has been asked “to supply 11,000 tons of steel to repair the Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Rail Line.”
The report describes the Evraz mill as having been “on the verge of shutting down” before receiving the order and quotes a county commissioner in Colorado as saying, “They’ve been laying a lot of people off in recent months.”
The Southwest Chief is a passenger line that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles, with the Federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant having been awarded to improve the line’s condition. More than 45 miles of rail will be replaced during the $21.8 million project, according to Fox 21.
The city of Pueblo has indicated to Fox 21 that it is applying for another TIGER grant to provide further passenger rail upgrades in the region, potentially providing additional orders for the nearby Evraz mill.
