An article in The Daily Northwestern reports that Evanston Township, Illinois, hosted its sixth annual Evanston Recycles event at Evanston Townships High School Saturday, July 9, 2016.
At the event, volunteers and city staff directed residents to “drive up,” and “drop off” their recyclables, including electronics and shredded documents, along with household items and clothing.
“We expand as things are denied in the landfills,” Kevin Johnson, event organizer and recycling and environmental maintenance supervisor for the Public Works Agency, told the newspaper. “Landfills are filling up to conserve space for true solid waste.”
According to the article, the event’s purpose is to provide a recycling outlet for residents and to help them become more involved in sustainability efforts.
“What we try and do is not just the usual recycling stuff, like electronics and document shredding, but we’re trying to branch out,” Environmental Services Bureau Chief Paul D’Agostino told the newspaper. “We’re trying to come up with more ideas of ways to help people empty their homes of the stuff they don’t need.”
