The European Commission is considering filing a lawsuit against Germany over its container recycling program. In considering whether or not to file a suit the EC states that it believes the program discriminates against the importing of foreign beverages.
According to published reports Germany claims the rules are to protect the environment and encourage recycling, while the Commission says the rules are made to protect German bottle manufacturers.
Last year Germany introduced a system of compulsory deposit on non-reusable beverage containers such as cans.
The rule favors domestic firms, who use refillable glass bottles, while foreign companies prefer plastic and aluminum in order to reduce the cost of transport.
