The European Parliament said its environment committee wants tougher rules than those already proposed by the European Commission for packaging waste.
The parliamentary committee said the minimum target for recycling the totality of packaging materials contained in packaging waste should be raised to 65 pct from the commission's proposed 55 pct by weight.
Furthermore, the committee says companies must be able to show that they have complied with the legislation while member states should provide incentives for using materials derived from recycled packaging waste.
The deadlines for meeting the targets have been put back to Dec 31 2008 from June 30 2006. AFX
