EU Commissioner Launches WEEE Plant in Ireland

EU Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas launched Ireland’s first automated Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment processing plant which will be capable of processing up to 30,000 metric tons of equipment.

TechRec Ireland Ltd., - a subsidiary of One51 (formerly IAWS Co-Op) – has constructed the facility at Park West, Dublin 12 at a cost of €10 million (US$12 million). The facility will employ up to 50 people and TechRec will market its recycling service to waste companies throughout Ireland.

Using Immark Technology, the TechRec plant will be capable of recovering 98 percent of all throughput and will export up to 28,000 metric tons of recovered raw materials – including iron and steel, aluminum, plastics granules, CRT glass and precious metals fraction.

Philip Lynch, Chief Executive, One51 and Chairman of TechRec, said, “This initiative by TechRec has been welcomed by both producers and businesses in the electrical equipment and electronic sectors and by the waste management industry.”

He said that the strategy of One51 includes a major focus on waste management, waste recycling and waste-to-energy sectors.

Gerry Killen, managing director TechRec, said: “The commissioning of this plant will mean that Ireland will be to the fore in Europe in complying with its responsibilities under the WEEE Directive.”
