ERPC names new chairman

European paper recycling group names Henri Vermeulen new chairman.

The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC), based in Brussels, has appointed Henri Vermeulen its newest chairman. His term will run from January 2015 through the end of 2016. Vermeulen replaces Beatrice Klose, secretary general of the European printing organization Intergraf.

Vermeulen is vice president of recycling for the Smurfit Kappa Group and represents the Center for the European Paper Industry (CEPI) in the EPRC.

The ERPC was established as an industry self-initiative in November 2000 to monitor the European Union’s progress towards meeting the paper recycling targets created in the 2000 European Declaration on Paper Recycling. In 2011, the ERPC committed itself to meeting and maintaining the voluntary recycling target of 70 percent in the European Union plus Switzerland and Norway by 2015 as well as qualitative targets in areas such as waste prevention, ecodesign, and research and development.

“The ERPC has been very successful in carrying out qualitative actions on paper recovery, to improve the quality of paper for recycling in Europe. The challenge is to maintain the current high collection and recycling volumes in Europe, despite changing paper consumption patterns,” says Vermeulen.
