U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has filed an administrative complaint against Strong Steel Products LLC for violations of EPA regulations to protect stratospheric ozone at the company's scrap metal processing plant in Detroit.
"We're alleging Strong Steel disposed of appliances containing stratospheric-ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants, or 'CFCs,' without recovering the CFCs or verifying that they had already been removed," said EPA Region 5 Administrator Thomas V. Skinner. He said Strong Steel also failed to keep required records.
The company has 30 days from receipt of the complaint to file an answer and request a hearing. It may request an informal conference with EPA at any time to discuss how to resolve the allegations.Get curated news on YOUR industry.
