The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has named the Lammers Barrel Factory site in Beavercreek, Ohio, to the Superfund National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites. Sites on the list are eligible for further investigation and cleanup under the federal Superfund program.
A total of 12 new sites were named to the NPL. The NPL now contains 1,245 sites. Cleanup of these sites have been undertaken, with cleanup finished at 866 sites and underway at 377 sites.
Lammers Barrel Factory, an abandoned two-acre property, was a chemical recycling and barrel reconditioning facility from 1953 to 1969. Since 1985, EPA and Ohio EPA have taken numerous steps to deal with groundwater contamination at the site, including extension of municipal water lines to homes with contaminated wells.
Most recently, in spring 2003, EPA supervised the collection of drinking water well samples from about 50 properties near the site. Groundwater, soil and creek sediment samples are also now being analyzed to determine the direction the chemical contamination may be moving and to see if the sediment poses a danger to people or animals who come in contact with it.Latest from Recycling Today
