European Metal Recycling Ltd. (EMR), Warrington, United Kingdom, has authorized treatment facilities in Brentford, Canning Town, Mitcham, Neasden, Wandsworth and Willesden in England supporting the Transport for London (TFL) scrappage scheme.
The TFL scrappage scheme, launched by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, enables those on a low income and with a registered disability to scrap their polluting vehicle in exchange for 2,000 pounds (about $2,600), which can be put toward the purchase of a greener vehicle or alternative modes of transportation, such as a push bike, or public transport or savings.
The daily charge for entering London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in a noncompliant vehicle is set at 12.50 pounds (about $16) and ULEZ is expanding beyond central London in October 2021. With the help of initiatives such as the TFL scrappage scheme, the introduction of the ULEZ and greener transport options, pollution in London has been reduced by more than 40 percent.
In a service that is being rolled out across the country, EMR says its Vehicle Recycling division offers a complete scrappage service. EMR has a dedicated website that allows customers to get a quote for their vehicle in three clicks, all they need is their vehicle registration and postcode. From there, customers can also book collections by a driver, should they be unable to drop the vehicle off at a local site. All collections are carried out contact-free, EMR says in a news release about its support for the TFL scheme.
EMR will register the vehicles' destruction with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), sharing the certification of destruction with the customer as the vehicle is accepted.
EMR ELV Specialist Dan Gannon says, “This scheme offers a great chance to swap your vehicle for a greener alternative. At EMR we are passionate about environmental protection and we are proud to be able to support our customers in recycling their non-ULEZ emission-compliant vehicles. Our [authorized treatment facilities], not only in London but up and down the country, follow a strict set of procedures to ensure minimum environmental impact when recycling vehicles.”
Over the past decade, EMR has invested more than 350 million pounds (about $457 million) in new technologies and partnerships which enable us to recycle 95 percent of any ELV sold to the company.
