Plastic in ELVs is focus of Rotterdam conference session

Efforts in Europe to separate and recycle plastic shredded during the auto shredding process will be the focus of a session at the 2016 Plastics Recycling Conference Europe event, scheduled for 1-3 November in Rotterdam.

The session is titled “Shifting Gears: Opportunities in ELV Recycling,” and has been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, November 2. It is described this way: The mandatory recycling of 95% of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) means an increasing amount of auto shredder residue (ASR) and obsolete components are heading into the recycling process. Presenters at this session provide updates on these markets.”

Three speakers have been scheduled for the session, each with experience and ties to ASR plastics recycling:

• Paul Mayhew, with MBA Polymers, who has been involved with that company’s United Kingdom ASR processing facility;
• Arie DeJong of ARN Recycling in the Netherlands, a consortium that has helped advance ASR sorting and recycling in that nation; and
• Professor Kim Ragaert of Ghent University in Belgium, who has conducted research related to the ASR sorting and recycling efforts of Belgium’s Group Galloo.

“We believe our audience of Europe-wide recyclers can benefit greatly from hearing updates on efforts to maximise the recycling and diversion percentage of ELVs, in particular the plastic fraction,” says Brian Taylor of the Recycling Today Media Group, one of the organizers of the event.

Plastics Recycling Conference Europe begins the evening of Tuesday, 1 November, with a Port of Rotterdam harbour cruise sponsored by Netherlands-based Peute Recycling.

Sessions held the following two days will cover critical topics of interest to collectors, processors and traders who handle plastic scrap within and outside of Europe.
