EFS-plastics, with headquarters in Listowel, Ontario, has developed a new product line called Nuera that made from recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) at its Hazelton, Pennsylvania, location.

According to the company, the LDPE resin market in North America is very dynamic, with legislation targeting certain LDPE film applications and some brand owners and converters committing to using recycled LDPE amid an oversupply of virgin resin and quality concerns around postconsumer resin, or PCR. Overarching these recent developments remains the need to act to battle environmental pollution and climate change.

EFS-plastics says Nuera LDPE has been developed for high-end consumer-facing applications, therefore, only the best-sorted postconsumer LDPE materials are used to create it. The company says it wants to achieve close industry collaboration to maximize postconsumer LDPE use in flexible packaging, with Nuera producing a virgin-like clear appearance with low gel counts and minimal impurities.

Hendrik Dullinger, EFS-plastics US vice president of business development, says Nuera LDPE is available in limited supply presently and that samples are available for testing and qualification purposes.

"Through advancements in our front-end infrastructure capacities [production] will be increasing on a monthly basis," he adds.

Three different blends of Nuera ranging from LDPE to LLDPE-rich will be available to the market, he adds.

A data-tracing system ensures transparency down to the level of each individual raw material source, EFS-plastics says.

“It is truly more than just another PCR,” Martin Vogt, president and CEO of EFS-plastics, says of Nuera. “It is the creation of a holistic system and collaborative approach to deliver a quality product that closes the current gap between supply and demand.”

First samples of the Nuera product line will be made available during the upcoming Plastics Recycling Conference, March 6-8, at the Gaylord National Harbor in Maryland.
