Sims Recycling Solutions, a global leader in electronics reuse and recycling with Americas region headquarters in West Chicago, Ill., has become a Champion of Data Privacy Day (DPD). As a DPD Champion, the company says it recognizes and supports the principle that organizations, businesses and the government all share the responsibility to be conscientious stewards of data by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.
Data Privacy Day, which is observed annually Jan. 28, is an international effort designed to encourage Internet users to consider the privacy implications of their online actions and to motivate companies to make the protection of privacy and data a priority.
“Becoming a Data Privacy Day Champion is not only a reflection of our commitment to privacy but also a demonstration of our support to encourage security and privacy awareness,” says Steve Skurnac, president of Sims Recycling Solutions. “Everyone’s data is stored in some way, shape or form, whether it’s through a payment process, printing, Web searches, etc., and we need to ensure all electronics are maintained and disposed of securely and responsibly, whether they are online or offline.”
Coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. The day commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.
