EcoLights, a fluorescent lamp recycling company located in Seattle, announced that it has attained ISO 14001:2004 certification. In a release, the company says that achieving the certification, along with the company’s deployment of a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS), demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility.
The release notes that EcoLights’ recycling facility already operates under permits with the Washington Department of Ecology and a local air agency. The company says the EMS implemented is designed to enable the company to identify and prevent activities that could adversely impact the environment.
In achieving the ISO 14001:2004 certification, EcoLights says it will be able to systematically and continually improve the processes used to manage and recycle millions of fluorescent lamps and other potentially hazardous materials each year.
The certification was conducted by NSF International, Ann Arbor, Mich., an independent consultancy that audits and assesses the effectiveness of an organization’s EMS.
Craig Lorch, vice president and co-owner of EcoLights, says the ISO process was a necessary step in the company’s evolution. “Although not required of us, choosing to become an ISO 14001 certified organization makes a clear statement to our customers and the larger community that we are committed to protecting the environment and safeguarding our employees.”
EcoLights was created in 1996 by the electronics recycling company Total Reclaim.
