ECO2 Plastics claims that initial test results show that the company's cleaning process can produce PET plastic flake that is suitably pure to use in manufacturing food-contact containers.
" Not only are we recycling PET bottles in an environmentally friendly way, but we are delivering the highest possible quality through the process as well," said Rod Rougelot, ECO2's CEO.
Preliminary calculations demonstrated that ECO2's recycling process is capable of producing PET resin that is suitably pure for use at levels up to 100 percent in the manufacture of food-contact articles that will be used in contact with all food types under the FDA's Condition of Use from hot filled or pasteurized above 150 degrees F through frozen or refrigerated storage: Ready-prepared foods intended to be reheated in container at time of use.
The company is conducting more tests. The company expects to file a formal application with the FDA in the first quarter of next year.
