Jonathan Short, managing director of the U.K.-based plastics recycling company ECO Plastics, is applauding the recent release of a report titled “Improving food grade rPET quality for use in UK packaging," which looks at MRF (material recovery facility) operations in the United Kingdom. The report was prepared by the Banbury, U.K.-based recycling research and advocacy group WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).
“This is an important report and one that could have a major influence of the future development of the U.K. industry,” Short says.
Short adds, “We hope that the MRF Code of Practice will standardize the quality of the feedstock that re-processors receive, but even more can be done by tackling the problem at source. Put simply, packaging producers need to consider the long-term usage of what is a valuable commodity by employing recycling friendly specifications in their designs. If we can do that we can establish a virtuous circle, increasing the amount and quality of the recycled plastic that we produce while at the same time decreasing its cost.
