The European Commission said it would take Austria and Germany to the European Court of Justice for breaking environmental laws involving recycling of old cars, water protection, and accident prevention.
"By failing to comply fully with these laws, Austria and Germany are not delivering the level of protection against pollution and other environmental hazards that they have signed up to at (the) European level," Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said.
The Commission said Austria had incorrectly implemented a law that allows consumers to turn in old cars and have them taken apart free of charge. Germany also had gaps in its translation of those EU rules into national law.
