E.L. Harvey Named Business of the Year by Chamber of Commerce

Corridor Nine Chamber honors Mass. recycler.

E.L. Harvey & Sons Inc., a disposal and recycling company based in Westboro, Mass., has announced that it was recently named “Corporate Business of the Year” by the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce.

“E.L. Harvey has been a champion in its industry, with exemplary business standards and growth,” says Barbara Clifford, executive director.

The company has been a family-owned and operated business since Emory Larkin Harvey founded it in 1911. It is among the top recycling companies in Massachusetts and provides disposal services for thousands of businesses and residences throughout the central area of the state.

E.L. Harvey began recycling cardboard, newspaper, rags and metal in the 1940s, began operating a dump in 1949 and opened two landfills in the 1960s.

The company continued to expand, adding its first baler in the mid-1960s and installing a shredder and a baler to destroy confidential records and high-grade office papers in 1988.

E.L. Harvey began operating a construction and demolition recycling line in 1995, which uses a trommel to separate wood, metal and concrete from other material.

A new building with a new recycling system, including equipment from American Baler Corp., opened in 1996. A new recycling center featuring a Bollegraaf Sorting System and Bollegraaf Confidential Destruction System opened in the building in 1999.

“E.L. Harvey & Sons is constantly seeking innovating and more efficient ways to process our customers’ waste and recyclables,” says Ellen Harvey, executive vice president. “Recent changes, such as our construction and demolition recycling line and our new commercial and industrial recycling line, will help us achieve the recycling goals of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s Solid Waste Master Plan, while providing the best possible methods of disposal for our customers.”
