The Dutch Government will spend EUR 425,000 (US $516,000) for the implementation of a battery collection and recycling system over the next two years. The project is intended to create the means to properly dispose of used batteries and rechargeable batteries, other than car batteries.
Magda Porumb, a director with the Ministry of Economy and Trade, announced that the project had been elaborated by the Ministry of Economy and Trade in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Waters in view of implementing the European Union’s Directive 91/157/EEC on batteries and rechargeable batteries containing hazardous substances.
“Although Romania does not produce such batteries, there is no framework on encouraging battery importers to recycle such waste for the benefit of the community and the environment,” she said.
Financed by the Dutch Government, the project will be implemented by the Dutch company Grontmij Water & Waste Management, which will build the framework required to coordinate battery importers, battery consumers and environmental organizations.
