Duales System Deutschland, which manages the recycling of packaging waste in Germany, is interested in adding electronic waste recycling to its responsibilities, according to press reports.
DSD chairman Hans-Peter Repnik said the electronic waste initiative is one of a number of ideas being developed under its Innovation 2007 program. The plan to include electronic waste with packaging and biodegradable waste in Germany’s yellow bag or bin system is being evaluated with the city of Leipzig and Alba Recycling.
Repnik said it is still too early to report on the progress of this and other projects within the Innovation 2007 program. These include trials with mixed waste from yellow and gray residual waste bags or bins in Essen.
DSD recycled 603,649 metric tons of post-consumer plastics packaging waste in 2003, representing 97 percent of all used plastics packaging in Germany. The minimum legal requirement is 60 percent.
