The Doe Run Co. announced plans to suspend operations indefinitely at its primary lead smelter near Annapolis, Mo., effective December 1, 2003. The company cited decreased domestic demand for lead as the reason for the closure. The company said it would reconsider reopening if markets changed for the better.
“This has been an extremely difficult decision made only after great consideration,” said Jeffrey Zelms, vice chairman, president and CEO of the company. “We have great respect and concern for those impacted by this decision, and we hope to work with our Glover staff over the coming months to ease their transition.”
The Doe Run Company operates three other divisions in Missouri. Doe Run’s Resource Recycling Division in Boss, Mo., will continue to operate at capacity. The company’s Herculaneum smelter and its Mining and Milling Division are continuing to operate and will regularly evaluate market conditions.
The company also announced that its Fabricated Products Inc., subsidiary also announced plans to close its Lone Star Lead Construction in Houston, Texas, upon completion of existing projects.
